Clay, the hero, is a conscientious objector to the war and to slavery, and so despite living in the South, he refused to fight. So the plot of this book in a nutshell is that it's set just after the Civil War. I don't think I've despised a heroine THIS much since, like, THE DUKE AND I by Julia Quinn. In one of my Colleen Hoover book reviews, I talk about how sometimes a book can be well-written but one of the leads can just totally ruin a book for you, and that was how I felt about Meg in this book. It's been a minute since I've disliked a book enough to give it a one star but this book was AWFUL. ![]()
